Our Story
BAMC grew out of a recognition that the Muslim community needed to move beyond being primarily inward-facing and become more actively involved in the broader society.
Through years of experience in mosques, civil rights organizations, local government, and community service, we recognized that there are various opportunities for Muslims to contribute to the wider community.
This led to the creation of the Bay Area Muslim Council: a hyper-local organization designed to help Muslims understand local issues, develop policies, serve through boards and commissions, and build meaningful relationships with elected officials.
Vision
BAMC's North Star goal is to have 1,000 Muslims serving in some civic capacity across the Bay Area's cities and counties. These individuals would be connected to one another, share knowledge, and promote values such as justice and human dignity.
Ultimately, BAMC wants to change the conversation within the Muslim community from only discussing distant or unattainable issues to asking how can we play an active role in improving the society around us?
That means engaging with tangible issues such as affordability, homelessness, public safety, traffic, and education, and creating a culture where civic service becomes a normal part of the Muslim community.
Our broader vision goes beyond the Bay Area: to help create a more just society and ultimately a more just world.
Our Core Values:
Service • Justice • Human Dignity • Compassion • Productivity
